Informa Exhibitions to launch International Congress for Joint Reconstruction
Informa Exhibitions, the organiser of the world’s second largest healthcare exhibition, Arab Health, and the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR), the organiser of worldwide conferences on joint reconstruction, have announced they will be working together on the launch of the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction – Middle East (ICJR-ME), which is scheduled to take place from 1-3 March 2012 at Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Led by Dubai-based orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Samih Tarabichi, ICJR Middle East will follow in the footsteps of other high-profile events held in Europe and the USA, as the leading congress for joint reconstruction in the region.
Under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this event will also focus on the principals of joint replacement surgeries and will include topics such as pre total knee replacements, the conservative management of generative arthritis, high tibia osteotomy and ACL reconstruction, all procedures which are increasingly performed on patients in the Middle East as well as the Western world.
One of the greatest challenges for the orthopaedic surgeons in the region is to get Middle East residents to understand the strain they put on their joints. Activities such as praying five times a day mean that patients need to have active knee and hip joints. Studies suggest the connection between obesity and arthritis is also clear and that exercise may help prolong the long term health of knees and hips.
As Director of the Total Joint Replacement Center of Excellence at American Hospital Dubai, Dr. Tarabichi says that most of the patients he sees in Dubai do not come to see him until it is too late and the knee joint is badly deformed. What some call the “Arab knee” is a phenomenon that must be addressed through primarily through prevention but also through adequate medical solutions being made available in the Middle East.
“ICJR run many successful events throughout North America and Europe and were looking to cast their net to the ever developing Middle East region,” said Simon Page, Managing Director – Life Sciences, Informa Exhibitions. “With Dr. Tarabichi being the champion orthopaedic surgeon in the region it was natural for ICJR to approach him for support. Informa Exhibitions are delighted to be involved in organising this prestigious meeting.”
Running alongside the Congress, ICJR-ME will host an exhibition with 25 companies showcasing their products and services. Commenting on the decision to move the exhibition from its original hotel venue to the larger Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Exhibition Manager Jamie Hill attributes this to the positive response the organisers received from delegates and exhibitors once the launch of the event was announced.
Mr Hill said, “Once it became apparent that we would exceed the maximum capacity for attendees we needed a larger venue to facilitate the huge interest in the meeting. We are pleased to have secured the participation of key organisations such as Zimmer, DePuy, Smith and Nephew, Bayer Healthcare, MSD, Boehringer Ingelheim, American Hospital Dubai, Karl Storz and Stryker.”
